Influence of azolla (Azolla microphylla) and urea-N on organic matter and NPK status of soil and rice grains in acid sulphate soil of central Thailand

Effects of azolla, azolla and urea-N, and phosphorus on the nutrient status of soil and rice grains were determined. A randomized complete biock design (RCBD) with 11 treatments was employed. The soil of the experimental field was classified as Sulfic Tropaquepts of Rangsit soil series. The results revealed that the N content in rice grains was significantly increased with azolla and urea-N when applied both to rice. Azolla alone did not significantly increase N in rice grains. Soil organic matter (OM) content was found significantly increased over that of soil before azolla introduction when azolla alone or azolla and urea-N was applied to rice. The N content of soil was significantly increased when azolla was grown as a dualcrop with rice and not incorporated as compared to azolla incorporation at the same level of urea-N to rice. Basal or 4 split applications of phosphorus (P) to azolla were found superior on its organic matter content of the soil. An 37.7 percent increment in soil N was observed when azolla was fertilized with 2 split applications of P on azolla compared to that of N in soil before azolla inoculation. Azolla can help improve soil fertility when it is repeatedly applied into the soil.
