Compression load deflection of cross-linked polyethylene and ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer foams

Compression load deflection properties of cross-linked polyethylene and ethylene vinyl acetate co-polymer foams produced by the Heat and Chill process from varying blowing agent concentration with a fixed amount of 0.8 phr dicumyl peroxide were investigated. Each compressive stress-strain curve of the foams illustrated a linear elasticity regime at low stress with a yield point which became less defind as the density decreased, followed by a long collacpse plateau. The highest density foam also showed a regime of densification above 70 percent strain in which the stress began to rise more steeply. Each regime was then characterised constructing with equations explaining the behaviour of compressive deformation. The compression properties were found to be directly dependent on foam density and the base polymer modulus. It was found that the foam softened as vinyl acetate content increased due to crystallinity reduction with a much lesser dependence on gel content.
