Fertile plant from young leaves-derived somatic embryos of oil palm

Vitro-Plantlets of oil palm derived from culturing leaves were acclimatized by various methods in 1990. Small and large polybag seedlings were carefully raised under controlled environmental conditions until 1991 when they were ready to transfer to the field. During this stage, morphological abnormalities of the seedlings were recorded. After transfering to the field for 3-5 years (1994-1996), morphological characters of the plant were again observed in comparison with seed-derived plants. The results showed that plantlet regeneration was induced under minimum phytohormones-containing medium. Complete plantlets could be successfully transferred to soil by dipping rooted shoots in a solution of 4,500 mg/l NAA for 15 minutes prior to planting in small polybag and keeping in a mist propagation box. Percentage survival of vitro-plants obtained in this experiment was 80. However, plantlets with healthy root system obtained from liquid medium was not necessary to acclimate. Morphological characteristics of plants in nursery stage (small and large polybag) and adult tree in the filed were normal like those obtained from seed-derived seedlings. After 3 years of transfering the plants started to produced a first inflorescence. The first set of inflorescences was mostly male flower. But the second was female with normal bunch of fruit.
