Forms, distribution and availability of phosphorus in some soils supporting natural forages in the derived savanna of Nigeria

Phosphorus status of some soils of the derived savanna of Southern Nigeria was evaluated by determining the relative abundance of various forms of P. Total P was low in all soils ranging from 34.8 to 115.3 mg/kg, with a mean of 60.1 mg/kg in the surface soil. Organic P formed about 21 percent of total P. The residual P was more abundant than organic P. The relative distribution of active P followed the decreasing order of Ca-P, Fe-P and Al-P. Available P was relatively high in 50 percent of the studied locations. Lower values of P were found in the subsurface soils than the surface soils. Available P showed highly significant correlation with total P (r = 0.85]. The high percentage of residual P and the low level of active P indicated a high degree of weathering of the soils.
