Effects of thiamine, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid and riboflavin on growth performance, feed utilisation and carcass composition of seabass, Lates calcarifer (Bloch)

Seabass (Lates calcarifer) of initial average weight 0.45-0.47 g were experimentally reared in 200 1 glass aquaria attached with a closed recirculating system. The experiment comprised 6 treatments with 3 replications each. Six feed formulae were used; 1) minced fish, 2) minced fish supplemented with complete vitamins and mineral premixes, 3), 4), 5) and 6) were same as that of formula 2 but thiamine, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid or riboflavin were deleted. After rearing period of six weeks, results showed that fish fed diet 1 exhibited the deficiency symptoms, and had the poorest growth. Fish fed diet 2-6 gave insignificant difference in average body weight among them. However, fish fed diets 3 (thiamine deficiency) and 5 (pantothenic deficiency) displayed some external abnormalities after eight weeks of rearing period i.e. imbalancement of swimming activity, some revealed darkening of the lower part of the body from the lateral line dawnwards and accerelated opercular movements. A study on their recovery showed that fish fed basal diet incorporated with complete vitamin (diet 2) showed better growth performance and other parameters i.e. feed utilisation and carcass composition than those given other feed formulae.
