Effect of Eimeria spp. infection and cyclopiazonic acid in broiler chickens

Present study was designed in 2*3 Factorail in CRD to determine the effect of giving cyclopiazonic acid (CPA) and coccidiosis alone and in combination to broiler chickens. Three weeks old mixed sex chicken were allocated into six groups of eight birds. They were dosed daily with CPA in gelatin capsules containing either 0 or2.50 mg CPA/kg of body wight for 9 days. Two days after dosing with CPA commenced half of the birds on each dosing level were either free from Eimeria to serve as control, single inoculated orally with 5.5*10*[3) sporulated oocyst/bird of Eimeria tenella or 11*10*[3) sporulated oocyst/bird of E. acervulina. The study was terminated 7 days after inoculated. The results from this study showed that dosing with CPA significantly depressed weight gain, feed intake, FCR, protein digestibility and significantly increased liver weight and plasma cholesterol, Inoculation with E. acervulina showed more significantly affects to chicken than E. tenella by reducing weight gain, FCR, protein digestibility. the duodenal and caecal lesion scores and oocyst counts were significantly decreased by CPA and coccidiosis. Packed cell volume was significantly decreased only by E. tenella. There were significantly increased only spleen weight by a combination of CPA and E. tenella. the data from the present study demonstrate that CPA and coccidiosis adversely affect broiler performance and health.
