Water-soluble vitamin requirements of yellow mystus IV: Requirement for vitamin B6, niacin, folic acid and choline chloride

Qualitative requirements and clinical signs of deficiency of various water-soluble vitamins were studied in yellow mystus Mystus nemurus having an average weight of 1.53 g. The experiment comprised six treatments with three replications each. Fish fed purified test diets deficient in vitamin B6, niacin or with no vitamin supplementation showed symptoms of vitamin deficiency, slow growth and poor feed conversion ratios. Fish survival on these diets was significantly lower than in fish on other treatments. Fish fed folic acid deficient diets had significantly lower growth than fish fed complete diet. Fish fed on diets without choline chloride supplementation gave normal growth and showed no signs of vitamin deficiency. There were no significant differences in protein efficiency ratios (PER), apparent net protein utilization (ANPU) and whole body composition across all treatments. Histopathology of gills, livers and kidneys was demonstrated in fish fed vitamin free diets and those without vitamin B6, niacin, folic acid or choline chloride supplementations.
