Kraft fibres were prebleached with the agents that significantly affect the fibre surface, i.e. oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, and/or ozone. Besides selective staining of fibres, which is based on the affinity of dyes for certain parts of fibres, polyelectrolyte titration and ESCA measurements were also made. The results of all these methods were compared with some standard properties of fibres. To draw relevant conclusions more easily, all data were evaluated using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Two main parameters have been set out: the lignin content of fibres and polarity of functional groups. The fibre surface has been evaluated referring to the fibre bonding.
