In Serbia fish production is mainly carried out in warm water - carp and cold water - salmonid fish ponds and to a lesser extent in cage systems; enclosed or partitioned parts of natural and man-made water bodies, while rearing fish in aquaria is mostly in the domain of hobby with small number of specialize aquarists an one public aquarium. Fish pond production is accompanied by a series of problems - from old neglected rearing objects, over surplus of workers (old fashioned production technology); deficit of turn over capital; expensive credits and lack of development strategy for fishery in Serbia. Contrary to the existing state fact that for the needs of population in Serbia, over 40000 tons of fish and fish products are imported per year, point to the possibility and necessity that the present production of 9000 - 10000 tons can be manifold increased, not taking into account possibilities for export.
