The role of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in reproduction of domestic animals

Cyclic ovarian activity is controlled by a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and gonadotropins (FSH and LH). Estrogen, produced by ovaries, has a strong effect on the release of these hormones via feedback mechanism. Hypothalamo-pituitary-ovarian axis is influenced by environmental factors (temperature, nutrition, photoperiod), which affect reproductive cycles by humoral or neural signals. The effects of nutrition on the reproductive system are here discussed at the molecular level. IGF-1 serum concentration, which depends on nutrition, has a strong influence on reproductive functions. The reproductive responses have been divided into two classes, based on fundamental differences in the physiological mechanisms that are involved. The first class involves the effect of nutrition on the induction of ovulation, at puberty or postpartum. The second class of response involves changes in ovulation rate.
