Breeding of transgenic corn (Zea mays L.) for insect tolerance against Lepidopteran species

In this study we evaluated a transgene from transformation to breeding and development into a potential commercial product. The cry2Ab gene was identified to protect corn from a wide range of insect pests like: Ostrinia nubilalis, Diatrea grandiosella, Spodoptera frugiperda and Helicoverpa zea. This gene was used to transform corn and numerous events were generated. Successful transformation was just the first phase for development of this product. During the selection process several evaluation criteria were considered: transgene efficacy and segregation, molecular characterization of events, agronomic performance, and transgene stability over generations and genetic backgrounds in different environments. The results indicated very high efficacy of Cry2Ab protein against major corn pests. The equivalency of agronomic performance was confirmed in hybrid trials. Furthermore, this product can improve insect resistance management by offering farmers additional gene for protection against insects.
