Phenotype and yield potential-based similarity study on enset (Ensete ventricosum welw. Cheesman) clones

Enset (Ensete ventricosum) is one of the well-known food crops in southern, southwestern, western and central parts of Ethiopia. Enset clones were collected from Wolaita, Kembata, and Hadiya and established at Areka in a non-replicated permanent field. On the basis of phenotypic resemblance, 88 clones used for phenotype similarity study were grouped into 29 classes. Clones with similar pseudostem colour, but slight midrib and petiole colour variation were grouped in different classes confirming that enset is a multicoloured plant. If colour-based phenotype similarity /diversity/ study is made, the inclusion of these vegetative parts will be useful in the classification exercise. In this study, clones with slight name difference were grouped under the same clusters, and clones with similar phenotypic appearance were also grouped under the same classes. Using selected better "kocho" yield-predicting variables 56 clones used for yield potential similarity study were subjected to cluster analysis and grouped into four different average yield potentials of low (4.3) medium (9.4) high (15.5) and very high (24.7) ton ha sup(-1) yr sup(-1). Clustering enset clones with similar yield potential could simplify future yield potential study of enset plant. About 68% of enset clones included in yield potential study that were grouped under phenotypically resembled classes were also grouped under the same yield potential classes. This indicates that grouping clones into different classes based on "kocho" yield potential and phenotypic resemblance could be complementary approaches.
