Performance of bread wheat varieties in moisture stress areas of Welo, north-eastern Ethiopia

A field experiment, consisting of 10 durum wheat (Triticum durum L.) varieties and one local variety was conducted during 1998-2000 cropping seasons at Kone and Geregera testing sites that represent drought-prone areas of Welo. The objective of this study was to determine the adaptability of these varieties in the areas. These varieties were evaluated for maturity date, grain filling period, plant height, grain yield, 1000 seed weight, biomass and harvest index in randomised complete block design with three replications on red and brown soils. There were significant differences (p0.05) among these varieties in maturity date, plant height grain yield, 1000 seed weight and harvest index at both sites and over years. The combined analysis also showed significant differences (p0.05) among these varieties for grain yield, 1000 seed weight and harvest index. From the eight bread wheat varieties, HAR 604 (Galama and HAR 1685 (Qubsa) performed better than the local variety. Moreover, these two varieties were uniform in their performance over the test environments. Therefore, these two varieties can be put under production in the area.
