Performance of elite faba bean (Vicia faba L.) genotypes for seed yield under waterlogged vertisols of the Ethiopian highlands

Vertisols are important group of soils in Ethiopia. About 14% of the cultivated vertisols in the country are believed to be under faba bean (Vicia faba L.). However, the productivity is limited by waterlogged and poor drainage conditions. Improved drainage and the use of resistant/tolerant genotypes to waterlogging stress could ameliorate this problem. A multi-location variety trial consisting of 13 faba bean genotypes was conducted under drained and undrained conditions at Ginchi, Inewari, Bichena and Sinja between 1997 and 2000 to identify suitable varieties. The genotypes were arranged in RCB design with three replication. Management was the same under both BBF and flatbeds at each location. Records on grain yield (g plot sup(-1)) were converted to a hectare (t ha sup(-1) basis and subjected to statistical analysis. Separate analyses of variance at each environment showed significant differences among the genotypes in most of the cases. Similarly, pooled analyses of variance showed significant differences among the genotypes both under the BBF and flatbeds. There was highly significant genotype by environment interaction. Three genotypes (Selale Kasim 91-13, Wayu 89-5 and Tumulo 89-28) were identified for better and consistent performance both under the BBF and flatbeds. Performances under BBF and flatbeds were positively and highly correlated, indicating that selection for better performing genotypes under the BBF could have enabled the identification of genotypes that performed better under the flatbeds and vice versa. Thus, separate evaluations under the BBF and flatbeds might not be necessarily needed.
