Addo- Ashong, F. W.
The paper discusses the housing situation in Ghana. The importance of using wood which abounds in Ghana as an excellent building materials is stressed. The advantages of using wood in housing as compared to other structural materials were enumerated. These included (1) The ease to erect, dismantle and modified to suit changing conditions. (2) It is easily worked and shaped. (3)It also has natural colour and texture. (4) It has high fibre endurance; wood does not suddenly lose its strength, distort or expand as does steel. (5) It has resilience and absorbs shocks with ease. Wood on the other hand has a number of disadvantages, the chief amongst them is biological deterioration. To prolong the life span of the wooden structures the following basic steps should be taken. (1) That only proven durable wood should be used (2) untreated wood should never be used in contact with the ground. (3) for indoors only seasoned wood should be used.
