The forestry sector in Ghana.
1999
Appiah, S. K.
Issues relating to the status and development of the forestry sector in Ghana are discussed. The forestry sector had virtually collapsed before the initiation of economic reforms in 1983, but now makes a contribution of 8% to the GNP, which includes 2% from non-wood forest products. Details are given of exports of timber and timber products from 1972 to 1995. Efforts to address the overexploitation of forest resources and move towards sustainable forest resource management are discussed. Other topics discussed are the fostering of wood processing, and the main constraints facing the Ghanaian forestry sector and measures adopted to address these.
