The paper indicates the need for assessing the production capacity of wood substance ("Productivity index") of a country in fixing the proportion of forest land to the country's land area. The role of the major ecological factors which govern the formation of wood substance has been briefly discussed. The procedure for determining the "Productivity Index" (PI) and a "Productivity Idex of Approximation" (PIA) has been detailed. These two sets of indces worked out for the Meteorological stations of Ghana, and another of "Rain Factors" have been appended. A preliminary examination has been made of Ghana's forest types with reference to the Productivity Idex figures. The usefulness of the productivity Index figures to international bodies like the F.A.O and to foresters and botanists has been printed out.
