An examination is made of the relatively new, but growing, use of a range of company-community relationships for tree growing, including outgrower schemes, joint ventures, and other formal and informal partnership arrangements. Their advantages and disadvantages are discussed in relation to trees outside forests. Examples are given from South Africa, Australia, northern India, Brazil, the Irish Republic, Ghana, China, and Canada.
