Correlation between initial wettability and sheet making properties of secondary fibres

Secondary fibras from recovered paper of different origin were investigated for pulp characteristic (WRV, SR, specific surface, drainage time and accessibility by iodine sorption) and than hand-sheeds were made and tested for mechanical properties and investigated for fibre interaction (short time wetting by PDA instrument, drop test and immersion into water for a longer time). For comparison a virgin pulp (unbleached sulphate pulp) was also investigated. It was found that the properties of paper sheets as well as those of pulp depend on the origin of the fibres and their prehistory before recovery and reuse
