A cytogeographic study of the fern genus Adiantum (Adiantum tenerum, A. philipense, A. concinum, A. excisum, A. hispidulum, A. raddianum, A. rad. var raddianum) growing on the slope of Merapi and Lawu volcanos was carried out. Somatic chromosome number counts of 54 native individuals of genus Adiantum were made by using modificated squash method to determine their ploidy level. The variation of ploidy levels of genus Adiantum were diploid (2 x) to septaploid (7 x). Polyploidy predominantly occured in the genus (96.3 percent) and had wider distributions than the diploid plants. The high degree of ploidy level have been found exclusively in higher elevation of the locations
