Popularizing gherkin: a cent per cent export-oriented delicacy

The gherkin, popularly known as pickling cucumber, has emerged as a potential export-oriented delicacy, fetching foreign exchange of Rs 1,500 million from 50,000 tonnes every year. Introduced in early 1990's in Tamil Nadu, gherkin is being grown in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra. Nowadays, it also grown in West Bengal and some parts of North India. Presently, 35 exporters are exporting gherkins to European countries, USA, Russia, Australia and Asian countries. Today it is the only 100% export-oriented commodity from the country. Its sole credit goes to Nunhems Seeds, Gurgaon, which is the pioneering organization in popularizing gherkin a lot among farmers by technical support and best quality seed for quality production, says Dr Kapur, its Managing Director.
