The potato tubers and plants are attacked by a number of diseases. The intensity of most of them once acquired, goes on increasing. If not managed effectively, they render potato cultivation non-variable. Chemical control measures for many of the diseases are known but their indiscriminate and continued use has raised eyebrows of many environmentalists besides their prohibitive cost. But integrated pest management aims at controlling diseases by combining minimal chemical use with other uses like disease-free (certified) seed (planting material), disease resistant varieties, biopesticides and cultural manipulations.
