If potato production in India is to be enhanced and sustained on an optimum growth level the problems must be tackled from the marketing end. First of all the farmers should be advised to allocate the area under potato rationally. It has been seen that market glut and subsequently price crash generally occur in that year when farmers allocate more area under potato encouraged by previous year's good price. Hence, Government agencies should come forward and advise the farmers regarding area allocation in a sustainable way. Secondly, it is possible to sow and harvest the potatoes over a longer period of time in major potato-producing areas of our country. Therefore, farmers should go for potato cultivation in staggered way using ideally-suited varieties.
