Integrated farming system of Azolla-Aigamo duck meat-rice production in paddy fields, 4: Dynamics of the nitrogen in Azolla, duck feces soil and rice plants

This study was conducted to illuminate the ecological dynamics of the nitrogen contents in Azolla, duck feces, soil, and rice plants. In addition, these relations were examined through a temporal approach to investigation, never previously used in conventional research of integrated farming system. It was found that the intake of Azolla increased as the crossbred ducks grew, and so did the volume of feces. This increased the content of nitrogen stirred and accumulated on the surface and in the solution of the soil, which was then absorbed by the rice plants. These dynamics were discovered through this study. These results clarified the ecological dynamics of Azolla where it contributed to expansion of the productivity in both crossbred-duck meat and rice farming by stimulating the eating behavior of the crossbred ducks, increasing and circulating the nutrients, and improving the growth phase of the rice plants. This revealed the potential to establish a low-input sustainable agriculture through the ecosystem of the paddy field.
