The deposited silt function of the settling basin being accompanied with the run-off of the red type soil

In Okinawa, soil runoff due to excessive subtropical rainfall and distribution of highly credible red(type) soil (Kunigami-Marzi) has become a problem at present. The present study analyzed the runoff tendency of the red (type) soil in a laboratory experiment and observed the physical properties of the sediments from the setting basis in the fields. In the erosion experiment, red type soil was filled in an erosion box and surface flow was applied on it. The surface flow was applied in the form of a partially strong rainfall. The amount of soil loss, turbidity and concentration of suspended sediments were measured from the erosion experiment. In addition, the sedimentation of the settling basin and the condition of the soil runoff of the Maekane area of Okinawa prefecture was examined. We found that the amount of soil loss is the highest during rill formation over the soil surface. For the settling basin, the fine particles (silt and clay) did not affect the sedimentation process and hence further measures should have to be considered in the control process.
