Effects of ethychlozate, paclobutrazole and other plant growth regulators on the promotion of flowering in citrus

The effects of foliar application of ethychlozate and GA biosynthesis inhibitors on the number of flowers of citrus trees were studied. 1. Three applications of 200 ppm ethychlozate every 20 days from August to October significantly enhanced the flower bearing of top-grafted ponkan (Citrus reticulata Blanco) scion which originated from nucellar seedling. The successive two applications of 1000 ppm paclobutrazol from December to January also increased the number of flowers. 2. The number of flowers on 'Kimura-wase' satsuma mandarin increased significantly by three successive applications of 100 ppm ethychlozate from July to September. Application of paclobutrazol and overlapped application of ethyclozate and paclobutrazol also increased the number of flowers, and the effect of overlapped application was similar to those of single application. 3. Until 15 days after application of ethychlozate, water potential in the leaf of 'Kimura-wase' satsuma mandarin remarkably decreased in the daytime, showing that the tree applied with ethychlozate was under water stress. This stress may be the cause of flower increase by ethychlozate application.
