'Shinano Sweet', a new apple cultivar

In 1988, the apple breeding program aiming at mid-season cultiver with good quality, high productivity and long shell life was started at Nagano Fruit Tree Experiment Station in Suzaka, Nagano prefecture. A new selection named 'Shinano Sweet' has been introduced. Details of the origin and Characteristics of this new cultivar are summarized as follows. 1. A cross of 'Fuji' and 'Tsugaru' was made in 1978. 97 seedlings were grown from this cross in 1979 and were grafted on M.26 in 1980. 'Shinano Sweet' was numbered as 'F/T 47' for identification, when the selection started in 1980. 'F/T 47' beard first fruit in 1984 and was selected in 1987. It was referred to as 'Nagano Apple #10(N.A.10)' in 1991 and distributed for trials to growers' orchards in each of the apple growing area in Nagano prefecture. It was selected and named as 'Shinano Sweet' in 1995 and registered as No. 5139 by the Seeds and Seedlings Law on August 22, 1995. 2. Fruit is large in size, approximately 350g in average fruit weight, round to oblong in shape. The cavity is medium in depth and in breadth, and the stalk is medium in length and thickness. Fruit colors on yellow-green back ground color with red stripe. The skin is rather smooth in surface texture and the lenticel size is medium.
