Ecological studies on the terrestrial orchid, Geodorum densiflorum in the Ryukyu Islands [Japan]

Ecological research of a terrestrial orchid, Geodorum densiflorum in the Ryukyu Islands has been carried out for the conservation of the species. The vegetation surveys of 12 habitats located in Iriomote Island, Ishigaki Island and Okinawa Island, revealed that G. densiflorum grew wild along the border of forests which appeared by lumbering and road construction. While the habitats of G. densiflorum were also disturbed and endangered by the human activities, such as the collection for horticultural interest in Ishigaki Island, and developments or urbanization in Okinawa Island. Those habitats should disappear by trifling environmental changes for human being. Most of the number of corms of the flowering G. densiflorum is also less than three, meaning that the age of the plant is not so important for flowering. White the number of leaves of the flowering plant was more than that of the non-flowering plant, meaning that the size of the plant is important for flowering. The observation of the wild habitat of the G. densiflorum showed that they are endangered of the species by the human activities.
