Koki INOUE, Kenichi IKEDA, Itsurou ISHIGAKI and Tetsuya HASEGAWA: Fundamental studies on the work time and work characteristics associated with the use of high performance forestry machines. J. Jpn. For. Eng. Soc. 17(1): 15-22, 2002. In order to reduce the mental work strain, not only must we improve the maneuverability of forestry machines, but also we need to reduce the continuous strain on the sense organs of the operator, such as the eyes and ears, and reexamine the work method causing such strain. In the present study, we determined the work method causing the continuous strain to the sense organs and the points to be improved by analyzing the relationship between work time and work procedure based on the actual data obtained using the high performance forestry machines. A histogram was drawn for the time taken for each work element during the operation of the high performance forestry machines. The histograms were mainly of the type I pattern. The characteristics of this pattern are reduced work time and the simplification of conventional forest operations, which relied on manpower. Because each work element was performed in a relatively short time in a continuous series, we could identify the work characteristics and the degree of difficulty of the task for each worker from the shape of the histogram. Two patterns were found to exist in the work procedure, but all work elements had type I work characteristics. Therefore, judging from the relationship between the work elements, we concluded that the rotation of the machine without logs was making the work monotonous and unnecessarily difficult.
