"Our recent study has demonstrated that calcium carbonate (CaCO3) has an inducing effect on the feeding behavior of newly hatched larvae of the silkworm, Bombyx mori. In this paper, the effects of several calcium salts and carbonates on the feeding behavior of the larvae were examined. Silkworm variety _gTo_h, _gYo_h and _gNe_h were used for the experiment. The diets that consisted of cellulose powder, agar, distilled water, and each test substance were prepared for the larvae. Larvae that simultaneously hatched from eggs of one mother moth were divided into several groups of 50 larvae. For the test, the groups were assigned to each treatment, and the test was repeated ten times by using ten layings. After rearing the larvae on the diets at 25degC in the dark for 72 hours, the number of feces excreted since the start of the feeding was counted, and the percentage of larvae remaining on the feed (the diet food) were calculated. It was found from the results of this examination that calcium silicate (CaSiO3), and calcium phosphate (Ca3(PO4) sub2) could promote the feeding of the larvae and restrict their movement to around the diet. Furthermore, when CaSiO3 or Ca3(PO4) sub2 was used together with sucrose, the feeding amount increased remarkably. In this case, the addition of CaSiO3 was more effective.
