Miyagawa, H. (National Agricultural Research Center for Western Region, Fukuyama, Hiroshima (Japan)) | Inoue, H.
To investigate the distribution of Burkholderia plantarii, the pathogen of bacterial seedling blight of rice, in Japan, rice paddy water was collected from 257 paddy fields located in 23 prefectures from Hokkaido to Okinawa in 2000 and 2001. Remote islands like Oki, Tsushima, Iki, Goto and Ishigaki were also included for examination. Number of B. plantarii was counted using a membrane filter method. Identification of B. plantarii was confirmed by the pathogenicity test and PCR test. As results, B. plantarii was detected in 77 paddy fields and from all prefectures including all the remote islands investigated. The maximum concentration of B. plantarii was about 3,000 cfu per 100ml. These facts showed the universal distribution of B. plantarii in Japan.
