Effect of pore solutions on liquid limits of swelling clay slurries

Abstract Slurry samples of the swelling clay, montmorillonite were prepared for different solution concentrations of two kinds of cations, Na+ and Ca2+. Then they were experimented following the Casagrande liquid limit test and fall-cone test. Although liquid limits are generally expressed by water content we introduced solid ratio which corresponded to water content of liquid limit in this study. According to the experimental results of Casagrande tests, solid ratios of liquid limits increased remarkably from 4.9% to l0.3% depending on the increase in solution concentration from 0.lN to 0.3N for Na-montmorillonite. For Ca-montmorillonite, this tendency was observed as more significant. In stead of the cone penetration depth, we estimated the shear stress which corresponded to it, and examined fall-cone test results. When assuming the cone penetration for liquid limit state as 13.4mm, it leaded to good agreements among both liquid limit tests.
