Abnormal spawning of female black rockfish, Sebastes schlegli, in the absence of copulation
2003
Nakagawa, M. (Japan Sea Farming Association, Tokyo) | Okouchi, H.
Five hatchery-reared female black rockfish (7 years-old) with prior mating experience were separated into experimental tanks before the mating season in order to prevent copulation. Egg diameter was observed weekly using cannulation methods. Eggs were shown to increase in diameter from the start of the measurements and then to decrease from 2-3 weeks following ovulation. Subsequently, all individuals released eggs. The prevention of copulation was clearly one factor causing abnormal spawning activity in eggs released during the mating season.
