Summary The yield of 'Mantenboshi' increased with increasing basal application or early supplementation of fertilizer containing at least 6 kg N per lOa as basal dressing or 3 kg N per 10a as topdressing at panicle formation stage, which is the usual regimen for 'Ichibanboshi'. The main factor that increased the yield was the increase in number of panicles. We consider that a particular characteristic of 'Mantenboshi' is responsible. On the other hand, high use of fertilizer can reduce grain quality and increase the occurrence of powdery mildew.
