Analysis of ear sterility factors, and effects on the growth and yield of early harvested sweet corn

Abstract A 2**4-factorial experiment, in which four factors -irrigation, shade, artificial pollination and cultivars- were taken to the 2nd level, was investigated regarding the occurrence of sterile ear, plant growth and yield in sweet corn. The findings were fourfold; 1 . Soil moisture and light intensity during the ripening period had a close relationship to the occurrence of ear sterility. The occurrence increased significantly due to dehydration and reduced light. Remarkable differences between varieties were also observed; '2. Artificial pollination did not decrease the occurrence of ear sterility; 3. Irrigation during the ripening stage increased the number of leaves and the weight of the ears.; and 4. Dehydration and reduced light during the ripening stage considerably affected ear weight.
