Sonoe, M. (Kyoto Univ. (Japan))
Abstract The modern statistical system in Laos was first established by The Government-General of Indochina in early 20th Century, but through the confusion of the changing regime of Laos in 1970's, completion bf concerned authorities and regulation was implemented slowly. After 1980's, the preparing of basic statistic data e.g. population census &c. and the renovation of the institution supported by international organizations and bi-lateral aid had been continued. At present, The National Statistical Centre is the authority of this matter. This note may offer information about nation-wide survey: Population Census, House Hold Survey, Agriculturai Census and Reproductive Health Survey. Because of Lao People's Democratic Republic being a multi-ethnic country based on agriculture, an imbalanced population density and environmental/socio-cultural diversity, it should be necessaryto make the development policy which can be adapted to actual situation of households in rural area. Nowadays, the birth rate in Laos may be high level on the whole and the issue of population control in rural area should be considered whether it will sustain the community in aspects of food population balance. Nationwide statistics must be constructed quickly. On the other hand up-to-date village information system with preciseness should be required for balanced development.
