Analysis of combining ability in breeding process of hybrid cultivars of sugar beet [Beta vulgaris]

Summary It is important to clarify the combining ability in the process of actual breeding for F 1 hybrid of sugar beet. In this experiment the combining ability of sugar yield component of sugar beet was analyzed by using the data from the field trials of F 1 hybrid and its parents for a number of years. Those data were expressed in percentage of standard cultivar "Monohomare". The combining ability was estimated for dominance effects by calculating the potence ratio. The results were as follows. In all the F 1 hybrids, the mean root weight was 96, sugar content was 102, and the number of F 1 hybrids showing sugar yield higher than "Monohomare" was 38. Root weight showed wide differences among F 1 hybrids, but its negative correlations with sugar content were not recognized. In root weights, F 1 hybrids were evidently higher than mid-parent values, and these over dominance were found to be a positive direction. In sugar contents, F 1 hybrids were almost the same as mid-parents values, but the majority of F 1 hybrids showed an incomplete dominance toward positive direction. Referring to harmful non-sugar content of F 1 hybrids, Na and K showed high positive correlations with mid parents values, especially Na was a highly genetical trait. And there were negative correlations between harmful non-sugar and sugar content, and positive correlations between Na and root weight. From these results, it was suggested that it would be possible to breed new F 1 hybrids with high sugar content and quality while maintaining heavy root weight.
