Tsumura, Y. : Utilization of Microsatellite Marker for Genetic and Breeding Studies in Forest Tree Species. J. Jpn. For. Soc. 86 : 184-190, 2004 Microsatellite markers have been utilized for various kinds of genetic and breeding studies since effective development methods of microsatellite markers have been published and many microsatellite markers developed in many kinds of species. In the field of genetics study of forest tree species, microsatellite markers are utilized for linkage map construction, QTL analysis, synteny analysis using comparative genome mapping and genetic diversity, and informative results were obtained. While, in the field of forest breeding study, these markers are used for management of breeding materials, improvement of seed orchard based on gene flow survey on pollen contamination, self-fertilization, contribution of each pollen donor and so on, direct individual selection of good cross-combination from test forests, and direct selection of best QTL possessed individuals from control crossed population. In this review, I discuss the present status of microsatellite utilization for genetic and breeding studies of forest tree species and also discuss the future perspective.
