Analysis of the silvicultural and socio-economic factors in wattle bark supply in the high growing zones of Nandi and Uasin Gishu districts, Kenya

This thesis is a study conducted during the 1994 Black Wattle bark-harvest season to investigate the reasons for decline in bark deliveries to the Tannin Extract Firms (TEF) based in Nandi and Uasin Gishu districts. The underlying reasons for this decline are postulated as reduced adoption of wattle production, poor management, and withdrawal of growers and dealers from wattle business. Households and wattle dealers were slelected for interviews using multi-stage cluster selection technique. The socio-economic factors and silvicultural practices that may have cused the decline in bark supply were investigated among the selected groups and analysed with logit regression model.
