Some technical and economic factors of developments of swine farming and pork distributions in Hanoi, Vietnam: A case study in three different districts of Hanoi suburb

Summary The aims of this study were firstly to consider the technical characteristics of feeding fattening pigs of swine faming in Hanoi and secondly to show the difference in economic performances among different scales of swine farms, especially since "doi moi" started in Vietnam. For these purposes, besides official data, the farm data were collected from 120 swine farmers in total, who are in three different districts of Hanoi suburb. Then data were analyzed with simple method of mean value by three different categories of farm size. Also, seven pork distributors were interviewed about their business activities. The following statements were the findings on the current swine farming and pork distributions in Hanoi suburbs: 1) With economic growth and increase in demand of livestock products in the cities since doi moi, the number of fattening pigs in Hanoi has rapidly increased year by year. And the difference in farm size has been gradually seen among swine husbandries; 2) In comparison with five years before, the productivity of pigs in individual farms has developed at the time of survey in 2000. Introduce and stable supply of hybrid variety of pig is the most important factor for the development. And adoption of compound feeds is another major factor; 3) Large-size swine feeders can enjoy less scale merit and competitive power on their business. Though large-size swine feeders, they have not enough developed yet as capital-intensive farming and over 90% of total production cost is occupied by proportional costs, consisting fodders and piglets; 4) And another constraint for further development of swine farming is a mismatch of the business size between large-size swine feeders and common small-size pork traders. It is necessary for large-size swine feeders to bare an additional cost for seeking appropriate number of pork traders.
