Seedling of both exotic and local tree species planted out in the field at the pilot forest site in Tiva, at Kwavonza location, Kitui district, often established with very low survival rates or even failed completely, despite adequate rainfall received in some years. Such failures were often erroneously attributed to termites and wild animals. Various demonstration trials aimed at establishing the possible causes of this high mortality rates were initiated. These included different land preparation, soil and water conservation and harvesting options. This paper present preliminary result of study of different land preparation methods whose aim is to modify the soil structure to facilitate increased moisture infiltration for beneficial use by planted trees.
