Genetic processes and structure of genetic diversity in forest tree populations

Genetically diverse forest ecosystems, species or populations need to be identified and targeted for ex, circum or in situ conservation. The genetic structure, i.e., the genetic diversity between and within tree species, can also help with sustainable utilization of forest genetic resources (FGR), for example in defining appropriate germplasm collection, evaluation and distribution strategies. But how can we identify such genetically diverse species or populations? And what processes affect their genetic structure? This paper aims to introduce some of the factors or processes that affect the genetic structure of tree species, how diversity can be measured, and some of the problems that might be encountered.
