Soil fertility management and constrants in arid and semi-aridlands of Kitui district, Kenya.

This paper show the study of how to identify soil fertility management strategies and constraints in the ASALs of Kenya. The study mainly covered Central, Kabati, Chuluni and a small section from 46 the farms on which the Social Forestry Extension Model Development Programme (SOFEM) undertake their activities. The soils were sampled form 0-15 cm depth for chemical and physical analysis. Results indicate that the soils are particularly low in organic carbon (C%) and total nitrogen (N%). Over 90% of the farmers use manure as a fertilizer resource. The quantities available in most farms are not adequate to effectively address the soil fertility in this district
