Harerge administrative region is characterized by low agricultural productivity. Shortage of fuel wood, fodder, pole for construction, and soil erosion are some of the major problems facing the region. The uncontrolled removal of natural forests, demographic pressure, and cyclical drought have aggravated the situation. To overcome these socioeconomic and ecological problems and to integrate agricultural and forestry activities in the region, it is inevitable to use the agroforestry land use system which produces trees, agricultural crops, and farm animals on the same unit of land. This paper attempts to present the preliminary results obtained from agroforestry research conducted at different agro-ecological zones of Harerge and the future research needs in perspective.
