Mallotus is a species rich genus with c. 150 species. It is classified in the subtribe Rottlerinae (Euphorbiaceae). The genus occurs mainly in (sub) tropical Asia and the Pacific, with only a few species in tropical Africa and Madagascar. It includes several indicators for different kinds of forest disturbance and shows a vast array of interesting morphological adaptations, like the presence of stellate hairs, glandular scales, and extrafloral nectaries on the leaves. The large number of species in combination with the variability in their morphology has resulted in several different subgeneric classifications. Since the traditional sectional delimitation of Mallotus is weak its species are currently being revised (5 out of 8 sections have been revised). Furthermore, a new subgeneric delimitation is being elaborated using morphological and molecular data in order to obtain natural groups within the genus.
