The publication of Checklist of Thailand in 2002 based on published literature up to 2002, included species described by Vainio (from early collections in Aarhus and Turku) and also recently published works. It included 554 currently accepted taxa, most of which were epiphytic. During an ecological project based at the Natural History Museum in London from 1990-94 on epiphytic lichens as indicators of environmental conditions, c.5000 specimens were collected from evergreen and deciduous forest in Chiang Mai and Uthai Thani provinces. A majority of these were not included in the checklist as they needed further taxonomic study. Since that time active research on this and other materials from Thailand has been taking place in Thailand, UK and Australia resulting in many new records for Thailand and in a high proportion of new species. A recently prepared thesis by Homchantara on Thelotremataceae in Thailand and parts of Malaysia described 114 species including 30 new species in 3 genera. Five new species of Pertusaria have recently been described. Even within a well-known group such as Permeliaceae new species are still being described. This makes it very difficult to estimate the total expected lichen flora in Thailand and demonstrates a persistent problem in many tropical zones where major revisions of families and genera may be required. The work on documentation is only possible with the aid of existing collections and good libraries which are mainly located outside Malesia.
