A study of the medicinal plants of Udigram, District Swat wasconducted during spring and summer 2003. The study revealed 78species under 37 genera belonging to 47 families, of which 68 plantwere dicotyledons, 6 monocotyledons, 1 gymnosperm, 2 pteriodophytesand 1 fungus. The largest family was Lamiaceae (9 species) followedby Asteraceae, Poaceae (each with 5 species), and Rosaceae (4species). The family Apiaceae, Asclepiadaceae, Brassicaceae,Caryophyllaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Moraceae, Oleaceae, Papilionaceae,Polygonaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Solanaceae, and Uriticeae wererepresented by two species each. The remaining families have onlyone species of medicinal importance. These species are used for thecuring of various human ailments in traditional system of medicine.The local uses, local method of recipe preparation and their local nameand diseases treated were recorded for each species fromknowledgeable and experienced persons of the area. Further study isrecommended to find out the availability of economical importantmedicinal and aromatic plants of the area and suggest theirconservation with the involvement of local people.
