The word drought has been used as a buzz phrase in the recent years. Thedefinition of drought is discipline oriented and for different peoples it hasdifferent meanings. Drought is a natural phenomenon and is a part of manyhydrological systems. The prediction of drought is a cumbersome assignment, asit is difficult to predict when the drought begins and when it finishes. Therainfall may give a relief in drought but this does not mean that it is the end ofdrought. In the present paper, drought is defined on agricultural, meteorological,hydrological and socio-economic bases. Various drought-identification indicatorshave been presented, to work out severity of drought from hydrological data.The impacts are also described, in brief, corresponding to each drought-definition.
