Performance of maize hybrids for yield and yield components

This experiment was conducted to study the performance of differentmaize hybrids for yield and yield components at Malakandher ResearchFang, NWFP Agricultural University, Peshawar during 2002. Twenty onemaize hybrids were studied using Randomized Complete Block Design(RCBD) with 2. replications. Data were recorded on days to 50% tussling,days to 50% Bilking, days to 50% pollen shedding, plant height, earheight and grain yield (kg/ha). The various maize hybrids showedsignificant differences for all the parameters studied. Maximum number ofdays to 50% tussling was observed for. NCML 6 (63 days), while leastnumber of days was observed for NCML 9 and NCML 11 (49 days each).Maximum number of days to 50% pollen shedding was recorded for NCML6 (65 days) while minimum number of days was found for N ML 11 (54days). It was found that NCML 4 and NCML 6 had maximum number ofdays (69 days each), while NCML.9 had the minimum number of days (55days) to 50% silking. The maximum plant height was observed for NCML 6(130.9 cm), while minimum plant height was observed for NCML 7 (80.70cm). Maximum ear height was noted for NCML 10 (54.40 cm), whileminimum height was observed for NCML 11 (32.10 cm). Maximum grainyield (4151 kg/ha) was found for NCML 13 while the minimum grain yieldwas recorded for DI C-6124 with a value of 929.5 kg/ha. The significantdifferences among the various hybrids for the various parameters maybe due to differences in genetic background of the hybrids.
