Comparative resistance of different cotton genotypes against suckinginsect pest complex of cotton

The study was conducted in Central Cotton Research Institute(CCRI), Multan, Pakistan during 2001. Twenty-two cotton genotypes (BH-121, BI-1-125, BH-147, CIM-473, CIM-482, CIM-499, CIM-511GE, CIM- 707,CRIS-467. CRIS-468, DNH-157, FNH-945, FNH-1000, MNH-633, MNH-635, MNH-636, NIBGE-1, RH-510, SLH-244, SLH-257, VH-141 and VH-142) wereevaluated under unsprayed conditions for their comparative resistance orrelative susceptibility to whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Germ.) adults, jassidAmarasca devastans (Dist.) adults and nymphs and Thrips tabaci (Lind.)adults and nymphs at Multan, Pakistan. The relationship between leaf-morphic characters (leaf hair density and leaf hair length) andpopulation of sucking insect pests was also investigated. The maximummean seasonal population 1.3 whitefly adults, 1.7 jassid adults andnymphs and 3.1 thrips adult and nymphs per leaf was observed ongenotype CIM-473,, BH-147 and FNH-945, respectively. The minimum meanseasonal per leaf population of whitefly was 0.5 on genotype BH- 121 andCRIS-467, jassid 0.6 on MNH-635 and thrips 0.8 on CIM-499. Leaf hairdensity and length were important morphic characters contributing someresistance against sucking insect pests. Leaf hair densities on leafmidrib, vein, lamina and leaf hair length were positively, negatively andpositively correlated with the population of whitefly, jassid and thrips,respectively.
